relief
My engine light came on a few weeks ago. I haven’t really been driving the car since it came on (which isn’t a big deal because I usually don’t drive the car, anyway. But I took my car to Auto Zone for a free diagnostic test over the weekend and found that the car’s condition is not life-threatening to me or to the car. There’s a short in the electrical system that doesn’t pose a major threat to the operation of the vehicle. This means that even though my engine light is on, I don’t have to be worried about driving the car safely. However, I still have to get it fixed soon, because if another problem happens, I won’t be aware of it, since the engine light is already on. I have yet to get an estimate for the work, and that is not going to be fun. But for the moment, let me just enjoy feeling relieved.

I’ve been driving my car with the engine light on for over a year. I used to have it checked whenever it would come on, spending hundreds of dollars which I think was worth it because I’d rather pay that than have another car payment. I’ve had the car so long, I’ve deduced (with the help of autozone and a trusted mechanic) that its on because the speedometer/odometer doesn’t work properly and I don’t think its worth fixing. (some times I can tell how fast I’m going, sometimes I can’t…I don’t care as long as I remain ticketless) My car has 197K miles on it. I hope to keep it at least another 3 years.
