luxury

April 3, 2008

When I was a kid, my idea of luxury was ice cream and/or pizza on demand, brand-name crayons that weren’t too waxy, happy meals…

When I was a teenager, it was getting manicures, being able to buy costume jewelry and nail polish at will, and getting whatever CD I wanted…

As a young adult in college, all I wanted was to not come up short on the rent, the ability to pay my sorority dues and buy step-team outfits, and to have the rare treat of eating out…

Now, I want dry cleaning.  I want keyless entry and remote start on my car.  I want my own house with a dishwasher, washing machine, and dryer.  I want the occasional massage, the occasional dining out, the occasional vacation, and to look good at work for less.  (And all of the above luxuries, too.)  Frankly, I haven’t thought much farther than this.  I have no idea what "luxury" will mean to me ten or twenty years from now.  For the moment, it’s enough to reach for the house and hope I can save money for the rest of that stuff somewhere along the way.
