So about that stimulus money this spring…
I was thinking of spending it instead of saving it, you know, doing my duty as a citizen who’s worried about the economy and whatnot. I could spend it on the upgrades to my car that I’ve been thinking about. The remote entry and privacy windows… That would be nice.
I was also thinking that I am still, for all intents and purposes, without a job to call my own. I suspect that a month from now, my current project will be over. Just because I’m looking for work doesn’t mean I’ll get it when I want it. So would it really make sense for me to be worried about a car upgrade and the American economy, when my own American dream is looking kinda shaky? I might not have time for that. That $300 (or whatever it turns out to be) could make a big difference to me when I’m more concerned about a car payment than whether I’m opening my doors with a key. Isn’t part of my duty as a citizen to be a good steward over my finances so that I don’t have to ask anyone to bail me out of a jam? Just wondering…

I’m also debating between spending and saving that check…I’m leaning towards spending it–I don’t often splurge on stuff just because I want it, and I’m thinking that $600 might be a nice opportunity to do some wardrobe-refreshing. That way, I could continue saving the $50 per paycheck I allot to clothes–for me, it’s a matter of buying it now vs. later. The situation is somewhat changed by job instability, though, so there’s definitely something to think about.
BTW, it’s “for all intents and purposes.”
Thanks

Well, for the record, I think you’ll find a job no problem. If for some reason you don’t have one come rebate time, you can always sock it away. Otherwise, I think it’s good to spend it…I’m actually going to try to spend it at a small business or in one of the industries that’s been particularly hard hit (like home furniture places).
The thing is, for me, it’s just going to make me spend the money sooner. I’ll get a new sofa eventually, but because of the rebate I may get it sooner.

Put yourself first!!! At the end of the day, Bush nor the economy will be there to help you out if you can’t pay your car note. I think you will do fine with the job search but always plan ahead and play it safe. I was going to take the $900 I am getting and using it for my trip to the Essence Festival in New Orleans this summer. But now I am reconsidering it. I have a 5 year old to think of. I don’t know where the economy is going to but it don’t look good and I want to be prepared just in case.
So my $$$ might go towards my cc debt or savings.
