hourly pay

March 14, 2008

Man, I don’t miss salaried work.  I’m required to work 40 billable hours a week.  But I get paid hourly and am encouraged to work 50 hours a week or more.  So I do, and I love the money.

I can even work as much as 10 hours a day on Saturday and Sunday  - I could theoretically do that and get in 70 hours a week.  I haven’t done the math, because I am not doing that.  You have to draw a line somewhere.  When I get home during the week I am tired.  On the weekends, I sometimes have to catch up on sleep.

Could I go in and pick up an extra 5-10 hours on the weekends?  Hey, my schedule permits.  But with volunteering to prepare taxes on Saturday mornings, church on Sunday mornings (and I don’t always go but I really won’t if I commit that time to something else), and wanting to support one of the presidential campaigns (people can still register to vote in the primary in this battleground state) at some time during the weekend (’cause it ain’t happening during the week), I’ve got enough on my plate, believe me.  I’d rather get my 50 in during the week, and give two fingers to the workplace for MY weekend.

I am not so eager to get into that house that I will sacrifice my well being and the things that are important to me SEVEN DAYS A WEEK to get it.  It’s about QUALITY OF LIFE.

I’m not ruling out weekend work entirely.  I could get a slow weekend.  I could really want the extra money.  But my first instinct is to pass on that.
