good mail

November 2, 2007

No mail is good mail, most of the time.  But yesterday I got a check in the mail - a refund from a class I took this summer.  Yippee!  Guess what I’m going to do with it?

I thought about taking advantage of all the pre-Christmas season Christmas sales going on.  I thought about holding on to it just because I’m broke and I may need it in the next week before I get paid.  But I am sticking to my guns.  I can be poor for another week.  I can buy Christmas presents later.

Right now I’m going to put that $175 towards my own Christmas present to myself - freedom from my old credit card debt.  Every little bit helps.

step by step

My best friend Sistah Beginner is the woman!  I say this first because she got free movie passes and she’s going to take us to the movies so we can get our girlfriend bonding on!

I also say this because last night, she told me that she has a spending plan that reaches out to the end of December!  She has calculated her expected pay and has compared it to her expected bills.  She tried to anticipate what she’ll need between now and Dec 31st so that it would be realistic (a point I love to tell people is that if you’re going to budget, make it realistic or it won’t work, which could lead to bad consequences).  She plans to get or stay current on her household bills, pay down her credit card balances, and save as much money as she can.  Her son is currently being cared for by a family member, but she’d like for him to be in day care, and that will take extra money.  She has defined goals, she’s chosen which priorities mean most to her, and she’s crafted a realistic plan based on those goals.  I can’t wait to see how much progress she makes!  Ultimately, she would like to have enough money to do major maintenance on her car so that she won’t have to buy another.  (This, you may remember, is progress from her previous goal - to buy a new car.)

She’s afraid that she might have to put the car maintenance on her credit cards after she pays them down.  We’re going to hope and pray together that she can pay for it outright without debt.  If she keeps saving and her car holds on, she can make it!
