new gig, new expenses
Sistah Beginner started a new job yesterday! I’m happy for her. She didn’t see much opportunity for advancement on her old job, and she knew she needed more money to change anything financially in her life, so she found something new and took a chance. Now she gets a little more income, and more opportunity to have skills that will translate into better lateral or upward career opportunities.
One thing, though: her old job was a short drive from her house. Her new job is way over in another county. She has to drive her son across the county to her grandmother’s house for free child care and then drive about a half hour or more to work from there. It would be great if she could move closer to work or at least her grandmother’s. Given her desire to put her son in day care soon, it would also be great if she could afford one near her job. She won’t know how things will work in her budget until she starts to get paid on her new job and sees how taxes and benefits work out. Things may be tight for a while because her car needs maintenance, especially now that she’s driving it farther every day.
Always an uphill battle, but you gotta hand it to my best friend: she’s still climbing.
