found pounds

August 17, 2007

I love when I put on a jacket for the first time in the fall and discover cash in one of the pockets.  It’s like a present from your younger self.

I made a mistake.  When I did my budgeting for the month, the only attention I paid to my extra paycheck was the amount that I could take from it to apply towards debt.  I totally overlooked making a decision on what to do with the rest of the money left over after I paid debt with that check.  My budget is based on the other income from this month.  So I have income that I haven’t designated for any particular purpose.  It’s like "found" money.

Now, I usually save or do debt repayment with found money.  But this time, I think I’ll do something different - something within me is whispering, "You’ve done really well this month - LIVE a little!"  I was planning on sacrificing my gym membership until next month, because notwithstanding having come up with the idea this month, I didn’t have enough in my allowance to do it until next month.  Now that I have this found money, it could go towards joining the gym.  Then again, I could do something fun with the money - go to the shore since I haven’t had the chance all summer, or I could go see this movie I’ve been having trouble getting to.  Or, I could get some clothes - you know I need some new clothes

Somehow I feel like this would be so much easier if I had anticipated having this money - I probably would have made plans two weeks ago for what I would do with it.   I usually just do nothing when I can’t make a decision.  I guess I’ll figure something out over the weekend.
